Vanilla Sky – Is a great movie

“I wrote the review for this movie years ago, since many people have found it useful I’m re-posting it here.”

One of the Best movies on earth.

Vanilla Sky

For all the Vanilla Sky haters out there and trust me there is a lot. Let me explain why this movie kicks ass. Off the bat David Aames (Tom Cruise) drives a phat car, that should be enough to win an Oscar right there. Second of all, he has everything, big house, women, his own company, he’s a millionaire. Basically everything we day dream about David lives. Life couldn’t get any better for David until he meets psycho biach Julianna (Cameron Diaz). I don’t want to spoil the movie for you if you haven’t seen it so quit reading if you suddenly have the urge to have some vanilla sky up in your life.

Anyway so Juliana is this hot successful model type everyone wants to hang with girl. Only for David she is quite simply a f-buddy which is cool for David but bad for Juliana because she always gets what she wants. The next girl to pop into David’s life is the sweet and innocent Sofia (Penélope Cruz). Now unlike all the other women who jump into bed with David without blinking, Sofia is different, she’s is what we call in England Stush (Did I spell that right?) this is unusual territory for David so he pursues her like no other.

David then does what would turn out to be the biggest mistake of his life, he sleeps with a psycho. Guys, never sleep with a psycho, it’s just not worth it. So Juliana begins to follow David around, turn up at his door step, blow up his phone, all the things psycho girls wake up in the morning to do. Moving on, David after a night with Sofia leaves his crib in the morning to be greeted by Juliana who offers David a ride to work ( big mistake ).

During the ride she freaks out screaming shouting and all the rest of it then hits him with the best line in the movie “Once you sleep with somebody you make a promise” That’s deep, but David’s like whatever man, ( huge mistake ). Now Juliana being the psycho she is decides if she can’t have him no one can so she drives off a bridge into what would soon become the ( Lucid Dream ).

What is a Lucid Dream? Google it. But this is the part many people have a problem with. They just can’t deal with the fact that what they’re seeing on screen might not actually be happening. It’s too confusing thus the movie is (shit). That’s horrible, open your eyes and concentrate.

After the crash David is no longer the good looking, smooth talker, slick walking pimp he once was. His face is screwed up pretty bad, so bad he wears a mask (That’s pretty bad). He walks with a limp, slurs his speach, shouts at everyone and everything, loses his friends, basically he’s pretty screwed up. David can’t handle this so he pops some pills and ends his life and we enter the (Lucid Dream).

Still with me?

During the Lucid Dream, (his face still mangled by the way) he somehow manages to keep one thing intact. His relationship with Sofia, being the sweet women she is she nurses David back to health, gets him on his feet again. During this time David is trying to fix his face via plastic surgery. Long story short David’s face is now perfect once again, his limp has gone, his slurred speech is gone, life is good, friends are back, and Julianna is dead. He can move on with his life again.

That is until he starts tripping, (these are nightmares, he’s dreaming remember?) pictures on his fridge which were previously Sofia’s are now Juliana’s, he spends the night with Sofia only to wake up in the morning to Juliana, his face is perfect then it’s banged up, banged up then perfect. These are all nightmares the worst one being when he’s making love to Sofia one night and she turns into Juliana.

This was the last straw for David so he freaks out and murders Juliana suffocating her to death with a pillow (nice touch).

Pulling the pillow away he realises he hasn’t killed Juliana, but the only thing that mattered in his life after all the bullshit and face restructuring he’s been through; Sofia. His perfect dream with intermittent nightmares has now turned into a Living nightmare. He’s in prison, face banged up, Sofia is dead, friends are lost. During this time he pieces together the moments after the crash and figures out none of this is true. He never got back with Sofia after the crash, she never nursed him back to health, it was all just a dream, a perfect dream he manifested before his suicide through the help of a company called (LE) you have to watch it.

Long story short, he decides he no longer wants to live this dream, Sofia never loved him like he thought, he did lose his friends, his face was banged up. He wanted to be real again ( bearing in mind ) that he had been dreaming for a frickin long time. Like 70 years or something. The world has he knows it has now changed, everyone he once knew is now dead, his company is bankrupt, he has no money yet he decided to wake up and live the real life.
