My type of Sci-Fi
I love sci-fi, and I really wanted to immerse myself in really good trilogy. I found myself in Waterstones one evening and picked up a book called ‘The Complete Robot’ by Isaac Asimov, I read the back and thought “well this sounds interesting”, but I never purchased it. I continued browse around and decided to purchase a book called ‘The Reality Dysfunction’ by Peter F. Hamilton.
You know what? I absolutely hated the book. Peter takes forever to get to the point and info dumps you with so much information you’re left wondering WTF. I tried and failed to get into this book, I eventually gave up around page 100. ‘The Reality Dysfunction’ is now strategically placed on top of my fridge so I don’t have to look at it every morning – I feel like a failure when I do.
So I found myself back at Waterstones and this time I was determined to find an author that ticks all my boxes. I’m a big fan of Orson Scott Card, actually that’s not strictly true, I’m a big fan of ‘Ender’s Game’, but I was bitterly disappointed with the sequel but I’ve heard good things about the Shadow series.
So here I am once again browsing around and there’s that ‘The Complete Robot’ again. This time though I read through it a little, not just the back as I normally do and I was hooked. Loved the stories, loved the themes, loved the style. Isaac Asimov has everything I want in an author, great stories, great dialog, interesting characters, empathy, joy, sadness. I went out and purchased the entire robot and foundation series as a result.
